STUDENT SALUTATIONS

Interview with a Meraki Yogi  |  Bruce Johnston

“I sustained a severe injury to my left leg in 2011. I have noticed more strengthening and flexibility there. I can’t squat on my heels like the rest of the kids, but there is always this year.”

When and why did you start practicing yoga?

Who has been a great mentor/teacher or inspiration to you and your practice?

I like all of them so far. I started with Kenyon, Chris, Alyse, Madeline and Rachel so I have a particular fondness for them.

How many classes do you take per week?

I try to make it to 4 classes. Sometimes with my work schedule that can be difficult!

How does yoga help your daily life?

I am in a fairly physically demanding job. On my feet all day, often carrying heavy and bulky objects unless I’m on my knees crawling around. While I move around quite a bit, it is usually the same motion all day for several days at a time. Yoga helps to stretch things back out and put my body back in alignment, and to use those muscles that were ignored. I have also noticed that while I am strong it is mainly in the large muscle groups. In yoga the core micro muscles get fired up and then all the muscles work together.

If any, what obstacles has the practice of yoga help you overcome?

Funny thing, I haven’t been able to sit cross legged since I can’t remember when. After about 9 months of yoga, I can fold my legs up and sit…for a bit. In my work I notice that it doesn’t seem as far to the ground when I need to go to my knees or even to bend over to pick something up. I also have stopped having a physical therapist work me over every couple of months.

Do you have any advice for your fellow yogi’s new to the practice?

Keep at it. Remember that no one else is watching or judging you.

Do you have a favorite mantra or quote?

Stay on your mat!!!

Why is Meraki the studio for you?

I appreciate the openness of the instructors. It is also nice that the instructors hang out at the desk before and after class, sometimes they just “geek out” about yoga and we yogi’s learn as much as in class.

Is there anything else you would like to add about your experience at Meraki?

I didn’t think yoga would be for me. I started coming once a week for Vin 1, then twice a week. Next thing I knew I was looking forward to hot yoga ( I hate hot) 4 times a week and feel cheated if I can’t make it!
Adrienne and Rachel have made a wonderful caring space where even a chubby old man can feel welcome and comfortable.
